On the way back from Singapore, I watched Dasvidanya, a Hindi movie, to kill time. It's the story of a simpleton, who will die in a few months. His soul then exhorts him into making a list of things to do for the fast depleting quota of earth moments. He does that and ticks them out on completion, one by one. He is transformed into a man with a purpose in life, going about his mission with zest and excitement. In a nutshell, he lives life to the fullest once he knows he has little life left. More than the story and the message, it's the simplicity of narration and presentation, sans much melodrama or exaggerated emotions that impresses the most. The story also does not seek to moralize, e.g. the protagonist sets himself material (a new car) and non-material goals (love, meeting childhood friends), without any patronizing or fuss around it. However, there are multiple but subtle takes on today's lifestyle and society showcased without intent to sit in judgment. The uncomplicated approach hits you and takes you in completely, or so i felt. Inspite of the subject, perhaps being sad, it's far from being a sad movie! It leaves you thinking, with a gentle push to introspect!

Agree with your observation 100% !!
ReplyDeleteI liked the movie too !! And I wrote a rather long piece ( very rare ) on it myself . Here it goes .....
.
Dasvidaniya
.
I watched Dasvidaniya movie last night ( mid night actually ) !
I put this film on ‘must watch’ list – for all who you can appreciate good sensitive acting, sober meaningful dialogs, polished humor and can share a certain amount of empathy & anguish .
The hero ( anti-hero actually ) Amal Kaul ( played by Vinay Pathak ) is a typical mid aged bachelor living with his mother in a middle class apartment . His whole life seems to have gone totally awry and he gets pushed around like a driftwood – squeezed into taxis, bullied by his boss, nagged by his mom and his whole life totally dictated by a yellow sheeted ‘ to-do list ‘ . Things only gets worse when he is diagnosed for stomach cancer and get only 3 more months to live .
And then his alter ego takes over and transforms him into what he always wanted to be/do . And his drab to-do list takes on an exciting "bucket list" avtaar .
Some beautiful moments are captured when
- he finally gathers enough courage & proclaims his love to his childhood friend ( played by Neha Dhupia ) in pouring rain - thru dumb charades .
- he breakdown, alone in a foreign country trying to jump over a bridge .
- his short relationship with a Russian stranger blossoms in 3 days
- he sings a song for his mother along with his brother
- he buys his new car and gives a ride to the sales girl
- and of course the way he makes his list .
- and the final scene !!
Amazing expressions , superb acting , brilliant direction & excellent supporting roles . Very rare to see all of these coming together & well coordinated in one hindi movie .
Do not believe if anyone says Dasvidaniya is a copy of ‘Bucket List ‘ ( Morgan Freeman & Jack Nicholson ) . Except for the list , there is very little in common .
And this movie is far far better and much more beautiful to watch !
So go ahead and buy this DVD . Will do good to your collection .
Best way to watch – all alone in the middle of the night !!
Cheers !
Krish ..
